When it comes right down to it, the quality of your education depends directly on the quality of the faculty members who teach your classes. At UNT, all professors are experts in their fields and many are widely recognized - even internationally known. The university has 758 full-time faculty members, plus 265 part-time faculty members and a host of teaching fellows and assistants. It offers an excellent student-faculty ratio of 17:1. The faculty includes African Americans, Latinos, Asians and American Indians and the university consistently seeks to hire more minority faculty members as part of its commitment to diversity. Faculty members are ranked in accordance with academic tradition (instructor, lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, professor) and may be tenured, tenure-track or non-tenure track. A number of faculty members who have attained the rank of professor and who have performed outstanding research or teaching are recognized by the UNT Board of Regents as Regents Professors. Regents Professors devote at least half of their teaching effort to introductory-level courses. In 1998, UNT had more than 60 Regents Professors, the university's top rank. Faculty members in any discipline who obtain substantial external research funds may be recognized as Distinguished Research Professors. The Decker Scholars award recognizes outstanding research by a faculty member in science, computer science or technology. The Toulouse Scholars award recognizes the outstanding teaching and scholarly/creative achievements of tenured members of the graduate faculty. The 'Fessor Graham Award, the highest honor bestowed by the student body at UNT, recognizes one faculty member each year for outstanding and unselfish service beyond the call of duty to students. |
