 This painting appears in Roscoe's
autobiography. It is by Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943), the maternal
niece of Roscoe, who painted it on the occasion of the publication of
an introductory chemistry book by Roscoe and Joseph Lunt (1866-1940).
Helen Beatrix Potter is well known for The Tale of Peter Rabbit
in 1902. The text above: "A Dream of Toasted Cheese" as the
educated mouse analyzes his favorite food. Below: "NH3.
The peculiar pungent smell of this compound is noticed if we heat a bit
of CHEESE in a test-tube. Roscoe and Lunt. HBP 94." The Bunsen burner
appears like the one viewed in the Althofen Museum {LINK:
Althofen}. Roscoe actually brought the prototype idea from England
to Bunsen's laboratory, where the design was modified to a pre-mixed system
which gave a blue flame suitable for spectroscopy {LINK:
Heidelberg}. There is evidence that the first prototype was actually
        designed by Faraday.
